The question

A metropolitan planning body needed a way to report progress on liveability that would hold over time and across very different parts of the city.

What we observed

The UN-Habitat Global Urban Monitoring Framework is a matrix of metrics aligned to Sustainable Development Goal 11. It was implemented for NSW cities on behalf of the Greater Cities Commission as part of the Commission’s strategic reporting.

The framework held in both forms: a standard version comparable between cities, and customised versions weighted to particular priorities such as child-friendliness, wellbeing, environmental sustainability or economic vitality.

What changed

The work demonstrated that the framework could carry strategic urban monitoring for an Australian metropolitan agency, and established a basis for other Australian cities and regional agencies to measure progress the same way.
