SHANNON SCHULZ

Qualifications

International Baccalaureate Diploma, 2015
BSc (Environmental Science), 2019 (Completing)

Experience

Texan-born, in 2017 Shannon acted as a research assistant on Christmas Island, working in collaboration with Parks Australia and the University of Queensland. She was involved in fieldwork investigating invasive species impacts and in physically demanding population surveys through the dense jungle. Compared with that, the Geografia office is a welcome (and comfortable) relief. With a background in Environmental Science, Shannon is passionate about natural resource management and sustainability and believes that data science is one key to improved outcomes for both. She has been selected for a range of overseas study programs including an exchange program in a Masters of Ecological Data Science at the University of Coimbra Portugal (2018), a Paleoclimatology expedition to New Zealand (2018), and an intensive Anthropology unit at the Catholic Pontifical University of Chile (2019). Her global outlook comes in handy given the work she does at Geografia. In late 2018, Shannon started her intern project, which is investigating the economic and social pros and cons of the mining industry in regional Australia.

OLIVER LOVE

Qualifications

Victorian Certificate of Education, 2018
BSc (Mathematics and Statistics), 2021 (Completing)

Experience

Born and raised in Canberra, Oliver started a mathematics degree at the University of Melbourne in 2019, where he will build upon many of the data analysis and coding skills he is developing at Geografia. A little short on professional work experience, he’s been thrown in at the deep end at Geografia, and is learning everything from how to navigate around a large Excel spreadsheet, to basic SQL and python coding. All the while getting exposure to a professional office environment (well, mostly professional). Oliver’s work is helping to shape his understanding of his own interests and skills. In early 2020, he will start on his Intern project for Geografia, which is investigating the large and growing store of social media data that Geografia has been compiling since 2016. This will make use of his new found skills as he interrogates the data, and finds (hopefully) insights and opportunities for using it in a meaningful way.
